Australia’s leading independent satellite specialist, NewSat Ltd, has been working hard on the much anticipated Jabiru Satellite Program. The fleet of Ka band satellites are expected to deliver high-throughput capacity and flexible payloads across the globe, with the first of the birds, the Jabiru 1, slated for a 2014 launch.

The Wheatstone Project in Western Australia is one the largest in the region and the company behind the project, Chevron, is making sure all systems are go. The recent contract signing between the LNG development and NewSat Ltd, will allow the latter, a Melbourne-based satellite communications company, to provide its expertise in communications. NewSat will deliver the needed communications infrastructure, both offshore and onshore, that will be used for the construction, administration, and operations of the Wheatstone Project. The contract, valued at $US8.59 million, is the largest teleport contract to date for the independent satellite communications company.
Astrium Satellites signed a contract with Jabiru-1 prime contractor, Lockheed Martin, to provide the necessary Ku and Ka Band payload hardware to NewSat’s Jabiru-1 satellite.
Andreas Lindenthal, head of Astrium’s products department, said the contract illustrates an increasingly common practice among satellite prime contractors that test the open market with value-for-money considerations rather than automatically purchasing from their own divisions.
Here are two press releases detailing NewSat’s recent announcement regarding increased revenues for their Teleport Businesses. The company attributes the growth to 306 new business contracts due to increased demand fro resource, mining, construction, military and government sectors.
